Hard drives are NOT Operating System specific. A working strong drive will work in any working computer. Your operating system on the sturdy drive may not boot in another computer, (probably wont) but the tricky drive will work, if you reformat and reinstall your software and drivers.
different brands are ok, different operating system will certainly work if you run from older publication to newer, i'm not so sure it will work if you take one from xp to 98. probably some issues near longer file name!
